Pokeball Cake

It's been a while since I posted regularly, but I wanted to share this:

My son loves, loves, loves Pokemon, so for his birthday last year, I had so much fun making this cake for him. The best part...it was so simple!

Pokeball Cake
It's just two round cakes layered, with red, white and black frosting. Then I got some yellow Peeps bunnies and decorated them to look like Pikachu. I stuck a toothpick in them to hold them on the cake and I was done!

My sweet boy loved it and said it was adorable, so we were happy all around!

Pikachu Cake

When I made a bunny cake for my 2 year old's birthday, my son said I could make his cake the same way...but a Pikachu cake! I think it turned out quite well, and my little Pokemon fan was happy.
DIY Pikachu Cake #pokemon

The steps for making a Pikachu cake are the same as a bunny cake...you will need white frosting, yellow frosting, Fruit Roll-Ups, mini marshmallows, and chocolate frosting.

My Little Pony Carousel Cake

When I was planning my daughter's birthday cake, she was very into My Little Ponies, so I thought a carousel with My Little Ponies was only fitting!

Lizard Cake

My son starts planning what he wants for his next birthday cake the day after his birthday. This past year he went through dozens of cake ideas and finally set on a lizard cake...

I'll admit it turned out like a gecko, but my son loved it, and that's all that matters, right?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

When my youngest turned 1, the only cake that seemed fitting for her was The Very Hungry Caterpillar! When we handed her that cake, she ate, and she ate, and she ate!

Thomas the Train Birthday Cake

My 3 year old daughter was obsessed with Thomas the Train when her birthday came around, so I knew that her birthday cake had to be reflective of this. After scouring Pinterest, I finally came up with this (and she LOVED it!):

And this is how I made it:

Sports Cupcakes

My boys had a combined birthday party last month, and since they are both playing sports right now, I thought these cupcakes were perfect:
Sport Cupcakes
I had a mixture of cupcakes (chocolate and vanilla) and only used two cans of frosting for the 48 cupcakes I made (chocolate and vanilla).

For the basketball cupcakes, I used red and yellow food coloring in vanilla frosting to make orange. I spread that on, and then piped chocolate frosting on to make the lines.

For the baseball, I frosted the cupcakes with vanilla frosting, and colored a little bit of vanilla frosting red to pipe the laces on.

For the football, I covered the cupcakes in chocolate frosting and piped vanilla frosting on for the laces.

For the soccer ball, I frosted the cupcakes with vanilla. Then, I piped hexagons onto it with chocolate frosting and filled in some of the hexagons.

I found sport invitations, plates, napkins and cups at Dollar Tree which tied it all together.

Butterfly Cake

My sweet little girl turned one recently. I feel like I have whiplash from how fast this year went by! When I was pregnant with her, I decided to decorate her room with butterflies, so of course, it made perfect sense for her first cake to be a butterfly!

I used gum drops which I flattened with a glass cup, and Spree candy for the decorations. This was such an easy cake to put together! It only took one 9 inch cake, and one can of frosting.

Lego Party: Pin the Head on Lego Man!

This post has been months in the coming, but I couldn’t NOT include this fun classic game in our Lego party theme…Pin the Head on LEGO Man! This was a very popular activity at my 5 year old’s birthday party and the kids got quite involved…Pin the head to the Lego man @ whatilivefor.net

Angry Birds Birthday Cake

I made this cake for my 7-year old’s birthday in the spring and loved how easy it was to make.Angry Birds Birthday Cake @ whatilivefor.net I used the “Angry Birds Knock on Wood Game” which I got for $5 on clearance. I baked a 9x13” cake, leveled it and used the part I cut off as the base of the castle. My son was insistent that he got to help arrange the pieces, which were held together by frosting. The “rocks” are Milk Duds.

Simple, fun and my son now has a game to play as well :).

How to Make LEGO Crayons

For my 5 year old’s birthday party, the LEGO theme was so fun to do! There were so many ways to tie it in, and I did a lot of adapting so that it would work for the 4-5 year olds we were expecting. Coloring was definitely on our docket, so I thought it would be fun to make LEGO crayons…DIY Lego Crayons @ whatilivefor.net Didn’t they turn out so cute?!

Lego Construction Cake

For my 5 year old’s birthday party, I really wanted to make him a Lego cake like this, but he wanted one with toys on top, so this is what I came up with: Lego Construction Cake @ whatilivefor.net I made two round cakes, layered them and frosted them green for the grass. I used a Hershey’s chocolate bar for the road so the Lego’s wouldn’t get quite as dirty. The Lego set is a “Lego Juniors Digger” set which was perfect for my 5 year old to build with minimal help and he was happy as could be with the final result!

Lego Party Invitations

My little boy just turned 5! We celebrated with a big birthday party at the park and the theme was LEGO…so be ready for a barrage of Lego party posts :). This is the basic invitation I mailed out and passed out to kids in his pre-K class and I got the pdf from squidoo. We just typed in the info related to the party and I printed it on cardstock at Staples. image0-001 - Copy I had wanted to make homemade invitations like these, but the printed ones were so simple and much less stressful!

Tank Cake

My husband requested a Tank Cake for his birthday recently and I was happy to oblige. After finding some inspirations from cakes 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, I came up with this:Tank Cake The idea of trying to make the tank green camouflage stressed me out, so I decided to make a desert-colored brown tank, which was super simple! Though my husband said it looks more like a German tank in style.

Pirate Cake

I remember going to a birthday party with my boys 2 years ago, and the theme of the 4 year old’s party was pirates. I was amazed that a boy so young could be interested in pirates, but we’ve reached that stage in life, where both my 6 year old and my 4 year old are fascinated by pirates. My 6 year old chose pirates as the theme for his birthday cake and I think it turned out pretty awesome (if I do say so myself)…Pirate Cake @ whatilivefor.net

I made a chocolate 9x13 cake and once it was cooled, I froze it over night so it wouldn’t be as crumbly.

Race Car Cake

My little boy turned 4 recently and he is totally into cars right now. When we accelerate quicker than normal while driving, he squeals with glee and begs us to drive like a race car again ;). So, for his birthday cake, race cars seemed fitting…Race car cake at whatilivefor.net

I just made a 9x13 strawberry cake (because his favorite color is pink right now). I leveled the top of the cake, made a road out of chocolate frosting, used white frosting to draw the lanes & finish line, and added grass.

My husband saw it and laughed because it’s another green and brown cake, much like this one, this one and this one, but C loved it and kept trying to drive the cars to the finish line :).

I’m so excited to see what C accomplishes as a 4 year old!

Dinosaur Party: Dinosaur Cake

To wrap up our week of dinosaur birthday party ideas, I wanted to show off the cake I made for K’s birthday party.

I was pretty thrilled when both of my boys asked for a dinosaur cake this year since their birthdays are 2 weeks apart…it just meant a little less creativity required on my part and C’s cake allowed me to learn and practice before K’s party where more people would actually see his cake :). P1030428

K begged me for a volcano so I took the corner I cut off at slant for the water, layered it on top of another corner and put a Ding Dong type snack on top of that. Even still this cake is not done to scale, but K loved it and I was pretty proud of how it came out. I also got to use some of the cute little dinosaurs I bought for the fossil eggs I made.

Happy Birthday K!
