Lowe’s Build & Grow: Mini Locker

This Saturday take your kids to make a miniature locker at Lowe’s. Register here beforehand and have fun making a little locker that your kids can keep their treasures in.

My 4 year old recognizes Lowe’s and knows it well :). It usually only takes us half an hour but is always worth it!

Ice Painting

The days are hot and long right now. If you need something to break up the monotony, try painting with ice. Just grab a bowl of ice, take the kiddos outside and let them have at it. This is a great opportunity to teach kids about evaporation and what happens to water…

Added bonus is that the ice helps you keep cool :)

Grocery Bag Kites

If you’re looking for another frugal kite option, try tying grocery bags to a long piece of string. The wind catches these wonderfully and my boys ran for an hour with their kites…perfect activity to tire them out for long afternoon naps :)

All of the other action shots were too blurry, but my 2 year old got his kite to fly quite well and my 4 year old was amazing with his kite! Go try this on your next blustery day.

Thanks Live, Learn, Love for the fantastic idea :)

Stamp Out Hunger

Don’t forget that today is the National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. All you have to do is leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mail box and your mail carrier will deliver it to your local food bank…what an easy way to give back!

Free Activities This Weekend

My boys absolutely love going to the Home Depot and Lowe's kids workshops and both stores are hosting them this weekend (both obviously focusing on Mother's Day):

At Lowe's your kids can make a flower vase. You can register before hand or show up right at 10:00 to make sure there are enough kits for your kiddos. The clinic lasts until noon and is recommended for kids ages 5-12, though we've taken both of our boys and at ages 2 and 4 they enjoy it a lot!

Have your kids make a Tulip Planter at Home Depot. You just show up between 9:00 and noon to build it. Last time we went, there were brownies, popcorn and balloons as well, though I don't know if this is common :). You may want to call ahead to make sure your store is participating.

Earn Free Scholastic Books

If your child is between the ages of 5-12, they can complete worksheets which can be mailed in to Scholastic and redeemed for up to 5 books! This is one of those days I wish K were just a little older, but what a fantastic program for kids to gain a love of reading. To download the activity sheets, visit Scholastic.

Go to the Zoo

If spring is in the air and you’re looking for something to do, check out your local zoo to see if they have free days during the colder months. Our zoo is free every Monday until the end of February, and while my mom was in town, we took my boys up there.

DSCN4953It was in the 50s and windy today so we were still a bit cold, but there were so many indoor exhibits that we had a blast. There were statues everywhere for kids to climb on, play grounds, and I even saw them putting in new wooden swing sets today, which will only make the zoo more fun next time we go!

Lowes Build & Grow-Music Box

imageThis Saturday (February 12th) from 10-11 AM your child can build a music box at the Lowe’s Build & Grow clinic. You do need to register first, and these clinics operate on a first come, first served basis. K is almost 4 and has loved these clinics.

This will be time well spent with your child if you are able to go…it takes less than an hour, and your child will have special time with Mommy or Daddy, and they get to bring something home! Your child will receive the kit to build, a certificate of completion, and a patch to put on their apron (which they will also get if this is their first time).

Lowes Build & Grow Clinic-Ball Toss

Since K had such a fun time with my husband the first time he went to a Lowe’s Build & Grow clinic, I took him a couple of weeks ago to build a game box. As we were leaving K asked “Mommy, is this for me to take home?” When I said yes he exclaimed “Thank you so much!”

Though the recommended age is 1st-5th grade, when we went there were mostly 3-4 year olds and since hammering is easy enough to learn, they were all doing great. K built his box with limited help from me. It only took 20 minutes total, but it was so fun to just sit with him.

imageThis Saturday, the 22nd, your child can build a ball toss. You do need to register before hand and the event lasts from 10:00-11:00 on a first come, first served basis. Make sure to bring the waiver form the have you print out.

If this is your first time, your child will get an apron, potentially goggles, and the kit to build the ball toss.

Every time your child goes, they get a certificate of completion and a patch you can sew onto their apron.

This is totally free and well worth the time you will spend with your child.

Box Ball

It seems that cardboard boxes become a part of my home décor until we find a good use for it…beyond it’s original purpose and wear it out. We’ve been reorganizing, which means I now have 3 more boxes to figure out something to do with. Maybe I’ll just leave them be and let them pass as some sort of modern décor… :)

Most recently I taught K the wonders of using a box for throwing balls into, and I am so glad I did! He threw balls into that box for half an hour, which should also mean he’ll sleep well after such rigorous exercise, right?

Parking Garage from a Box

In case you didn’t know, we love cardboard boxes around here. Quite often when the UPS man delivers a box, K starts spouting off all the things he wants me to make out of our new box. DSCN4607
K keeps asking me for a blacktop (aka road), but we’ve already made one, so I wanted to try something new. DSCN4612
In the two days we’ve had this, K has spent several hours driving his cars up and down the ramp and parking them on the upper level. Crafts are always more rewarding when the one you make it for enjoys it :)DSCN4611
I just cut off the top flaps of the box and used those to make a ramp, an upper parking level, and support beams under both of them. It took 20 minutes max and is still reaping rewards. DSCN4608
Does anyone know how to make a motorcycle out of a cardboard box? That’s my next request :)
