The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

When my youngest turned 1, the only cake that seemed fitting for her was The Very Hungry Caterpillar! When we handed her that cake, she ate, and she ate, and she ate!

My daughter loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and I was pretty pleased with how her cake turned out! All you need is one bundt cake of any flavor; white icing; green, yellow and red food coloring; Hershey kisses; purple Laffy Taffy; and one chocolate chip for the mouth.

Bake the cake and let cool. If you have enough time, put it in the freezer to make it easier to cut without crumbs everywhere.

Cut the cake into thirds.

Rearrange the cake to look like so:

I rounded the ends to look more like a head/tail. Frost the cake with green for the body and red for the head. I made several different shades of green to make it look more like Eric Carle's caterpillar.

Make a tiny bit of yellow icing for the outline of the eyes, and put some green food coloring in the middle.

Cut 3 Hershey kisses in half and use those for the legs.

Roll a purple Laffy Taffy out flat and cut out two antennae.

Put a chocolate chip on for the mouth, and you have a very hungry caterpillar!

Thank you Coolest Birthday Cakes for the inspiration. I'll be linking up to Tip Me Tuesday at Tip Junkie.

  1. Hi..I love the deep colors you got for the head and the body icing. Mine always end up bright pastel. Any tips for getting such a nice shade without it going muddy? Thanks!

    1. Lpaz I used the site below which provides the number of drops of food coloring to get certain colors...I never realized how much food coloring it really takes! (If you're using store brought frosting, use the numbers in the parentheses). https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/articles/frost-by-numbers-how-to-make-frosting-colors

  3. What did you place this cake on? What kind of tray/mat? I want to make this for my daughter's first birthday.

    1. Ash, I just used a big white cutting board, but you could cut a piece of cardboard to the size you need and cover it with foil.
