Felt Mitten Ornament

These felt mitten ornaments are perfect for making as little add-ons to Christmas gifts this year, or for having your kids make to teach them basic sewing skills!

Simply cut out a basic mitten shape from two pieces of felt. Cut out some rectangles of white felt for the cuffs, and start sewing the pieces together (or have your kids do it).

Leave a hole big enough to stuff some poly-fill inside, sew a ribbon to the top to hang it with, and sew the opening shut.

You can easily add embellishments like buttons, lettering (I did my son's initial and the year-14).

Felt Light-saber Ornament

Is your house as Star Wars obsessed as mine is right now? Our family dressed up in a Star Wars theme for Halloween, we have tons of Star Wars Legos, and my boys begged me to make them light-saber ornaments this year...

I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out! I free-haned the whole thing, but the handle was a grey rectangle, which I stitched the black details on. The blade was cut like so:

Once all the pieces were sewn together, I started sewing it closed at the tip of the blade, and stuffed with cotton as I sewed. I sewed in a piece of yarn to hang it with (my boys picked purple yarn of all colors!), and tried it in various places to find the best balance point. The ornament is about the thickness of a pencil.

I also added their first initial and '15. I hope these are something they enjoy pulling out each year and that these ornaments will remind them of my love for years to come.

Sharing the Holidays with Febreze

This will be my baby girl's first Christmas and I am so excited! I can't wait to see all three of my children during the holidays. There are so many wonderful things to look forward to from winter/Christmas crafts to the Christmas parade in our town. This year I just want to soak it all up, because time only seems to be going faster and I don't want to miss the wonder and awe in each of my children's faces.

Butterfly Mobile

When I was expecting my boys, we were in school and had a very small income. I spent as little as possible and we relied mostly on gifts or hand-me-downs from family and friends. Suffice it to say, decor was basically non-existent for my boys.

This time, however, I have loved decorating a nursery for our baby girl! The room she is in was already painted a sage green and I knew I wanted lilac/purple butterflies as the accent. My husband declared that purple wasn't girly enough and pink needed to be involved, so we ended up with purple and pink, and I love how her little corner of our home has turned out.

After searching for a mobile that fit the style of the nursery and not finding one, I decided to make a mobile for our daughter and here it is:

I used the butterfly felt soft toy pattern at Sew Sweet to make the butterflies. The only things I did different than she did, was to stuff the wings so they wouldn't flop down while hanging, and I sewed circles/hearts onto the wings. This was a great project for me while pregnant because it kept my hand busy while I was sitting/resting (which I had to do a lot!).

I sewed some purple ribbon to the backs of the butterflies and glued them to the inside hoop of an embroidery hoop I bought at Walmart. I glued more ribbon to the hoop and hung it from a hook.

Clothespin Ornaments

Last week I had a bunch of girls from our church over to make ornaments for the tree at church and these are what I came up with…clothespin ornaments: I was really pleased with how they turned out and how easy they were to make…

Santa just requires the bottom 2/3rds of the clothespin to be painted red. Cut out a thin strip of black felt for the belt and draw on black buttons. Cut out a white felt beard and a red felt hat. Add some eyes and you’re done! Clip it to your tree.

The reindeer needs to be painted brown first. Then hot glue on a small red pom-pom, paint on some eyes (or add some googly eyes), and hot glue a pipe-cleaner folded into antlers on. My boys insisted my reindeer needed to be a bit more feminine with a pretty little flower.

For the snowman, paint it white. Then use a toothpick to add dots of black for the buttons, mouth and eyes. Paint on a carrot nose. Hot glue a felt hat and you’re done!

Star Wars Finger Puppets

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Now, we’re making the transition to Christmas and it’s time to start planning presents for all of our loved ones…

If you have a Star Wars fan on your Christmas list, I highly recommend making them Star Wars finger puppets…how cute are these?!

   

I bought the pattern from The Idea Room for $4. My husband happened to be at the store and bought me a bunch of felt. Sheets of felt are so cheap that when all is said and done, this is a very affordable gift and will provide hours of entertainment.

I did make most of the bodies longer because I made these for my dad and the bodies are a bit short to stay on grown up’s fingers.

My favorites were R2-D2 and the Ewok!

Soda Bottle Jet Pack

I have to be careful not to leave my Pinterest page open, or my boys will start scrolling through and demanding we do every single craft they find on it…soda bottle jet packs were one of those demands.
We don’t drink a lot of soda, so my 6 year old went nearly crazy waiting for two 2-liter soda bottles to be consumed, washed and dried. But when they were, this is how we made the jet pack with things we already had on hand:

Felt Fortune Cookies

Ok, so Chinese New Year is coming up…Sunday February 10th. If you’re planning on celebrating, and if you’re looking for cute table decorations (or if you just LOVE fortune cookies…), try making these felt fortune cookies! These little cookies are also perfect for putting little love notes in for your significant other for Valentine’s Day this year!

They are super simple. Just cut out circles of felt. Mine were 2 1/2 or so inches across (I traced the lid of a mason jar directly onto the felt.

Monster Patch

We are officially to the ages where pants don’t stand a chance in this house with two active boys. I am seeing more and more holes in the knees and knew something had to be done! After seeing some posts on Pinterest linking to here, I knew monster patches were exactly what those holes needed :)…

I loved how cute it turned out and how simple the patch was to do…just cut a red piece of fabric slightly larger than the hole. Cut some teeth out of white felt or other fabric and sew it to the top of the red patch so the teeth show. Place the patch on the inside of the leg with the teeth facing out and either sew it on or fuse it on using Heat N Bond or other similar products.

Cut two circles from white felt and two smaller circles from blue or other colored felt and hand stitch them above the “mouth” patch to make the eyes.

Now your kids’ knees won’t get cold and they’ll look super cute! Roar!!!

Dino Party: Felt Dinosaur Banner

When I saw Dana’s Peep bunting this year, I knew I had to make a dinosaur banner for K’s birthday party! This was so easy to make and it was fun décor which now hangs happily in my boys’ bedroom :)

This banner was super easy to make. I just cut out felt dinosaurs from my applique post, and hot glued them onto a long ribbon. I then hot glued googly eyes onto each dinosaur and hung it up. As simple as that!

Trick-or-Treat Bag

The Halloween festivities are in full swing and if you’re like me, you may be tired of just giving your kids a plastic shopping bag to take trick-or-treating. All you need to make your own adorable trick-or-treating bags is some felt and a sewing machine…
I cut some black felt double the size I wanted for the bag, and cut some strips of black felt for the handles (double the width desired). The ghost and pumpkin were free-handed, though you could easily search for templates online, and machine stitched on.
Put right sides of the bag together and sew along the sides and bottom of the bag. Take your strips and fold in half lengthwise. Sew along the edge of your handles.
Fold the top edge of the bag inside the bag and pin in place. Pin the handles to the inside of the bag and sew around the entire top of the bag.
Now your kids can trick-or-treat in style and they have a unique bag that won’t be mistaken for the bunches of other plastic bags at Halloween functions!

Felt Car

I was completely in shock at how much my boys love this little car. I had originally made it for a project that I’m mulling over, but may have to make another one since this one has been commandeered…

Felt Crayon Roll

I cannot begin to tell you how ecstatic I was when, after leaving K alone with crayons, I walked back to find this completed picture:

I had thought he just wasn’t a crayon kid…I never was. But, he colored, and actually gave different aspects of the picture different colors instead of one or two scribbles which was all he had done in the past. After taking crayons to church in a plastic baggie for a few weeks and having him show interest there as well, I decided to hunt my reader for the crayon roll Skip to My Lou had published.

This seriously took less than an hour to make and is so simple because you just have to be able to sew relatively straight lines.

Felt Strawberries

I finally caved…after seeing adorable felt food on the blogosphere for I don’t know how long, I couldn’t resist anymore. I even asked for felt for Christmas.

Since K devours strawberries like crazy, I figured that would be a good place to start. The wonderful thing about felt food, and especially strawberries because they aren’t very big is that they can be sewn by hand!
