My Story: 9th Grade

9th Grade...Freshman year...the year I became the ultimate geek. I didn't really think so at the time, but now that I look back, I was a geek. I guess it doesn't matter too much because I loved it at the time and was happy.

A friend talked me into joining flags with her. You know, the girls who twirl 6 foot flags with the marching band? Yeah, that was me. It was a huge struggle for me because I was super tiny...I didn't weigh 100 lbs yet, and was less than 5 feet tall. I spent hours trying to learn how to just toss up that flag and actually catch it without running away screaming. The fake rifles that we learned to spin later were even more terrifying.

By the end of the year, I could toss and catch with ease and had awesome biceps for how tiny I was :)

I was also still playing violin in the school's orchestra, and going to early morning seminary. Seminary is kind of like Bible study for our church, and you go to it every school day. Since I was in flags, I had to go to seminary at 5:30 AM. I still don't know how I did that for 4 years!

I was usually gone from 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM, as well as church activities during the week, and night rehearsals for flags during marching season.

It was in 9th grade that I got my first e-mail address (aol.com) and learned how to use askjeeves.com as a search engine.

Like I said, I loved it! I was constantly busy and never had time to really think about doing anything else, and that lifestyle fitted me well!

Join us each week at Mommy's Piggy Tales as we recount experiences of our youth!

  1. Great story! I have utmost respect for flag girls! And I don't think there even was an internet when I was in 9th grade!!

  2. We love watching the flags when we go to the 4th of July parade! They look so coordinated! Just like Olivia, I don't think there was an internet when I was a freshman. Not that many people had PC's either...I took a typing class in summer school on electric typewriters!

  3. Oh, I was always envious of the flag girls! I was a pompon girl at the front of the band, but I always thought the flag girls were so cool! You're clearly younger than me because I didn't get my first email address until college! I never even got on internet until I got married! ha! I mean, I'm not THAT old - I saw people using internet in college, but I thought it looked so HARD to do. Funny. I can't believe you got up at 5:30 every day. That is dedication.

  4. A fun blend of social life and new technology trends.

I always wondered what it would be like to twirl those flags. Better to be a happy geek than a miserable cool person:)
