Pirate Cake

I remember going to a birthday party with my boys 2 years ago, and the theme of the 4 year old’s party was pirates. I was amazed that a boy so young could be interested in pirates, but we’ve reached that stage in life, where both my 6 year old and my 4 year old are fascinated by pirates. My 6 year old chose pirates as the theme for his birthday cake and I think it turned out pretty awesome (if I do say so myself)…Pirate Cake @ whatilivefor.net

I made a chocolate 9x13 cake and once it was cooled, I froze it over night so it wouldn’t be as crumbly.

I cut off the top 1/3 of the cake and cut the corners off the front of the ship. With the pieces I cut off, I arranged them to make the raised portions of the ship, including the “poop deck” which my darling son insisted had to be on the ship, for accuracy’s sake! Pirate Cake @ whatilivefor.net

I frosted the entire cake with white frosting to keep the crumbs under control. Then I mixed a little chocolate frosting with white frosting to make a lighter brown for the lower deck. The upper deck, and sides of the ship are chocolate frosting.Pirate Cake @ whatilivefor.net

I then used mini Hershey’s bars as the railings.

I bought a dowel at Walmart for 20 cents, and had my husband cut two masts. Then, I cut out 2 white rectangles, and printed a pirate flag from online. I punched holes and put them on the masts.

A little blue mixed with white frosting made the water along the bottom of the boat. Add some pirates, and you have a fun little pirate ship! Oh, and my favorite part…the candles are stuck out of the sides of the cake as cannons!

Thanks to Pinterest, I got my inspiration from Catch My Party, Alayna’s Creations, and Sisters Shopping.
