In one of my classes in college I saw a video about a family who worked really hard to let their kids be involved. One of the ways they did that was putting all of their normal dishes in a bottom cupboard, so their little ones could set the table. I thought this was genius and stored it away in my memory for the day I had a spare cupboard to put dishes in.
My brother-in-law gave us an old video cabinet, which wasn't very practical as such, so after we moved here, it became the cabinet for kid's dishes.

It's not the prettiest thing ever, but I knew it had to have some good use. Now K can get his own dishes every day for dinner, and even helps unload the dishwasher.
This system works great, at least as long as the cabinet stays closed...
